The history of the Van der Bauwede brand began in 1890. Its founder is Alexis van Der Bauwede. At first, Alexis's specialty was repairing large clockwork mechanisms. He worked in the city of Bruges, as well as in other Belgian cities, where he repaired mechanisms in Church and Cathedral clocks, for example, the clock of the Cathedral of Bruges, which Alexis worked, weighing 27 tons, - a modern landmark of Bruges. After a while, Alexis started making clockwork himself.
Alexis ' other passion was selling jewelry. When it came time to retire, Alexis turned the business over to his son, Michel. He changed the course of development of the family business. After Michel took over as Director, van Der Bauwede's company began to specialize in jewelry as well as pocket watches. Michel opened the first van Der Bauwede boutique in Lille. Michel's son, Pierre, made the family business famous all over the world by inventing his own special type of rectangular diamond cutting, called the VDB Diamond Cut. Currently, the company is headed by the fourth representative of the van Der Bauwede family, Maxens. He is equally passionate about design, business and watchmaking.
